A new chapter

Or new article, if you will. I turned in my two week notice to my current employer on Friday. That part went well, aside from one snide comment from my boss, which I fully expected.

I have accepted a new position as Marketing manager of a new bi monthly magazine, focused on style, fashion, dining, homes, shopping, etc - all in North Carolina. The parent company has been around for decades with a current North Carolina publication and the new magazine is a bit younger in look, feel and content. It's a little scary about starting a new job and with a brand new magazine, but it's also what invigorates me and wakes me up in the middle of the night! And, what better than working for a magazine that is focused on what I love reading about anyway.

So, Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone.. Erin Go Braugh! We're off to run the 5 mile Beer Run (it's actually a run, not just an excuse to drink beer - even though beer tokens are included in your running package). Then later tonight, onto some more Irish festivities this evening at a local Irish pub.

Well dressed pooches

I'm a little obsessed with Zeus & Zoe's collars. Zoe especially. Zeus typically sticks to the basic red. But for Zoe, this is a small collection of collars she has worn in the past and I can't seem to get rid of any of them, even when they don't fit her. God help me, when I have children!!

She had the red, multi colored with little bones. A patriotic collar from Old Navy, now faded from too many swims in the lake. The red & green with blinking lights that she wears at Christmas. The navy & green Eliza B. collar is so cute, but doesn't show up well on her. A pink and yellow gingham that we bought in Annapolis. She is currently sporting a pink & green argyle collar and I am on the search for her new summer collar.

Lover, not a fighter

If you ever need to feel loved, meet Zeus. He is our male lab, who is probably one of the top 3 sweetest dogs that I have ever owned.

Zeus isn't the best retriever in the world, he likes to swim, but prefers to hang out in the shallow end, likes sun-bathing and sleeping on top of air vents for the heat or air-conditioner over running around and chasing squirrels.

If you ever want a big lab head to rest in your lap, Zeus is your man. He loves to be loved. He loves to be petted. He loves a good belly rub. He's the dog that will quietly sneak onto the bed, just to stretch out and lay his pretty head on the pillow like a human. He always comes to "see" me in the mornings with a wagging tail and a "smiling" face.

Swimming is my life

Zoe is the swimmer in the family. When we go to the lake in the summer, she flies out of the car, down the hill and immediately into the water. Forget all the unpacking, bringing in luggage or the fact that everyone with her is still clothed. She is all about the water.

While at the lake, we participate in water sports - skiing, wake-boarding and a little tubing. There is lots of cruising around in the ski boat and pontoon, just for fun. There is even more floating in the lake, consuming copious amounts of adult beverages and talking about whatever strikes our fancy. While we float, Zoe swims. She may be fetching something, or not, it really doesn't matter.

She is O-b-s-e-s-s-e-d. But it makes for sound sleeping at night!

Alarm Clock

As long as we have our labs, I will never need an alarm clock. By 6 or 6:30, nearly every day, they are crying to be let out of their kennels. Their main motivation? FOOD. But somehow, they seem to know that when we are up at 4:30 for boot camp, it is not yet time to rise & shine.

I find it funny - we awake, shower, get ready to start our busy day and find ourselves driving to work, running to meetings, making presentations, working out,etc. But the lab - they awake, enjoy a little food, run around outside, do a little business and immediately are ready to come back inside for a belly rub and their first of many daily naps. Ahhh, the life!

Speaking of...

FOOD. I went by Subway at lunch & they now have apples and raisins as side items, in place of the chips or cookies. I opted for apples and they were good. I was trying to counteract the entire large bag of cheddar cheese quaker rice cakes that I have eaten since Friday. They only have 70 calories per serving, but it really defeats the purpose when you eat the whole damn bag. I just crumpled up the empty bag and placed it in my Subway bag, in hopes that no one will notice it in the trash.

I also made a yummy shrimp scampi with whole wheat linguine yesterday. It was one of Ina Garten's recipes and was a great meal to serve on a warm day. Hubby and I ran 6 miles, so we felt that we deserved a little pasta!

Chewy goodness

I decided that since part of my blog title is "Labradors" and since I live with two of these delightful dogs that I call my babies, that I would dedicate this week of blogging to my labbies.
Just to give an overview, my hubby and I have two black labs, Zeus and Zoe, who are almost 3 years old. They are litter mates with one male and one female. We bought them when we were dating under the condition that "this dating thing better be serious".

Let's discuss labs and chewing. We had heard all the horror stories - you'll come home to find your sofa destroyed, your favorite shoes in shreds,etc.

I would say the Top 3 worst things that our labs have chewed are...

1) The hot water heater nozzle. We arrived home one night to a small flood coming out of our laundry room that also contains our hot water heater. We found the nozzle to the hot water heater that they had managed to chew off. Why? Just tell me why plastic is so entertaining? I'm sure the flood of water was an added bonus.

2) The railings of our patio. We have wooden railings on our patio with excessive teeth-marks. You can tell how they were growing, by how high the teeth-marks were on the rail. They also love sticks... what is it with the wood?

3) They also chewed, ahem, killed a possum. Of course, they were proud of this feat and left the poor possum at our back door. They love to chase squirrels, but I don't think the squirrels will ever be slow enough to get caught, but I guess the possum was slow-moving.

I think age remedies some of this chewing habit and we keep them supplied with chew toys of all kinds, but we have still had a few issues, just as expected.

My favorite birthday gifts

Yes, birthday week is coming to an end, but I wanted to share some of my favorite gifts.

Beautiful white hydrangeas and pink roses, in a square vase from my hubby. This arrangement was done by the same florist we used for our wedding and Stacy always does a beautiful job.

Hubby also decked me out in outfits from JCrew and Ann Taylor. He's not afraid to shop for clothes. He also picked up the ultra preppy, madras patchwork beach bag. Perfect for trips to the beach or smelly yoga clothes!

My best friend Karen returned the favor with personalized stationery from Lauren Goessling Designs. These argyle notecards in chocolate and pink are too cute!

And last, but certainly not least, Sarah from The Seven Spot recently held a Lurker Appreciation contest. She asked for 50 commenters in a specified time period & I was the lucky winner. She offered to make a $50 donation to the charity of my choice. I chose Earlier, an organization that was started by a local woman to help with early detection of breast cancer. I will also be matching Sarah's most generous donation. Sarah also graciously asked all of the commenters to consider making just a $1 donation, so we could do triple the amount of good. Pay it forward, if you will. I consider this a most special birthday gift.

Food-paux

I went to a little deli for lunch today and ordered a turkey wrap and fruit. I noticed that a side of ranch came with my wrap, for yummy ranch dipping. I had eaten some of the wrap without dippage and a couple of bites with the dip.

I couldn't really taste it, but then I noticed another lady dipping her fruit into the same ranch looking dip. "How odd", I thought when I dipped my fork into the "ranch" and discovered it was fruit dip. DUH!

Have any of you ever experienced these kind of food-paux? I have a cousin who accidentally used salt instead of sugar in his sweet tea, but I think this is the first time I've done this!

Overheard at birthday dinner last night...

Setting: cozy restaurant scattered with various couples and groupings of friends.
Location: table immediately behind us
Players: two women, apparently good friends
Drink: bottle of red

Statement: "I just wish he'd plan something spontaneous for us, you know? Like a trip to Europe or something".

I love to be surprised as much as the next girl, but really. I'm thinking a weekend trip to Charleston, SC but Europe? I personally couldn't stand giving up the control, hence, why I didn't opt for the surprise honeymoon

Lollipop Scrooge

I met two friends for lunch today and one of my Birthday treats included a large lollipop shaped cookie, complete with pink and green icing. As I was reading my cards, I noticed the feeling of being watched. A young little girl, complete with two ponytails, was totally eye-balling my cookie/lollipop and looked as if she were about to cry if I didn't hand it over.

I debated... do I

a) offer her a bite?
b) give her the cookie?
c) move the cookie out of her eyesight and hope that she'll stop looking and forget?

Of course I moved the cookie out of harms way. She had a grilled cheese in front of her & I didn't want to spoil her lunch!

Let Birthday week commence

I spent some time yesterday at one of my favorite haunts, JCrew. I restrained, but did manage to buy myself a couple of birthday gifts. My belt is slightly different than the one shown, but will be perfect for summer shorts & capris. My want-list still has the green (palm) and navy shorts, the navy/yellow/white argyle cardigan and a new round of tees and polos. I had to keep a few items on the list for Hubby.

Birthday week shall end on Saturday with a much needed massage and facial. We ran 5 miles yesterday for our Half Marathon training. I felt pretty good, but my left knee was pretty tender, especially after Mile 3. I had the same feeling when I hit Mile 11 last year during my 1st Half. Ugh, I see one of those knee-bands in my future!

Return to college days

Thursday was D-Day around our household. Hubby's company has recently gone through a merger and they cut 40% of the sales force, which could potentially include him. They were told they would receive calls after 12 noon and I'm happy to report that he received his call at 11:57 to tell him that he was keeping his job. Whoo-hoo! Needless to say, we were both relieved, but Hubby decided that he should celebrate this news with a couple of his friends.

Several of his friends work out of their homes, so there is great flexibility in their schedules. About 9 hours of drinking/Golden Tee/Pool playing later, I found them in a somewhat coherent stupor. One friend had almost gotten into a fight, so the dutiful wife (me) packed them into my little A4 and carted them home. I did feel like it was 1993 and I was caring for somebody after the pre and post parties from a frat party!

Safety for your pooches

Hubby and I returned home from dinner last night to a bit of a scare. Our female lab, Zoe was crouched down on all fours, against the "wall" of the kennel. We have the black metal kennels. Her ID tag from her collar was stuck in between one of the slats on the kennel and she couldn't move. I felt awful, because we were gone a couple of hours and of course, we don't know how long she had stayed in that position - plus, what if she would have choked herself? So, new rule - collars come off when in the kennel and I'm on the lookout for a new cute collar that can be embroidered with her name and phone number.

If anyone has any suggestions, please send them to me. I know that E used to have a good site for dog collars/accessories listed at Preppy Cafe, but it's no longer there.

Mid-decade crisis?

As I rapidly approach my next birthday that ends with a 4, I have been wondering, am I entering my Mid 30's or is it still considered early 30's? I know that 35 will mean Mid 30's, but does 36 automatically put you in the late 30's category?

I typically don't care about age - I've always seemed to do things later than my friends. First bra, Period, first boyfriend, extra year of college, marriage, etc. Not sure why this one is bugging me this year! I think it's like when you go to the Doctor and your chart has how many years and months old that you are ... it's not enough just to have the year. I'm also beginning to hear my "clock" start to tick and that is a little scary too.

But don't worry... I do love birthdays and will be celebrating "birthday week" as usual!

Weekend Recap

It was relatively quiet around Chez Labrador this weekend. Hubby and I had date night on Friday for sushi. Saturday was spent cleaning, errands and somehow getting sucked into a marathon of America's Next Top Model. Geez. We did successfully book our hotel room for the Country Music Half Marathon in April. I didn't realize how quickly rooms would fill, so we ended up paying more than we expected, but it's a super deluxe room located in the downtown area.

On a cleaning note, and of course with our abundance of dog hair, I will say that my favorite cleaning tool is the Dyson. We have the Animal and it is great.

Also, an update on Let's Dish . We tried one of the dinners and a dessert over the weekend and they were both great. We tried the citrus tilapia last night. It consists of filets of tiliapa, drizzled with olive oil & cayenne pepper. There are also slices of lemons & limes between the filets. Before baking, you sprinkle a few spicy almond slivers on top. It was easy and very good. We also tried the individual molten chocolate cakes. Ooey-gooey chocolate and cake. Need I say more?

We also started Week 4 of Boot Camp today. Today we focused on arms/back for our weights and then tons of running outside. Backward running, power skips, pop squats, jumping jacks and squat thrusts. Whew.

Addition to my morning coffee

No, it's not Kahlua, it's dog hair. How do these labs manage to shed so much & how does one little hair seem to find it's way to my hot, vanilla-creamed coffee? I'm used to seeing a few tumbleweeds behind doors or under chairs, but this?? Oh well, I guess a little dog hair won't kill me!

Let's Dish...

We seem to have had an abundance of quick-fix dinner solutions pop up in our city. We have Super Suppers, Let's Dish & I think there is even another one. I had the opportunity to go to Let's Dish, make two meals and a dessert for $25, so I went.

It is such a great concept and perfect for busy professionals or for busy moms. You can choose to either prepare yourself or have the staff do it for you. It's a bit more expensive if you have the staff do it.

I chose pork tenderloin with apricot-chile glaze and prosciutto wrapped chicken breasts, stuffed with herbed cream cheese. And, individual molten chocolate cakes. I was shocked at the servings - two tenderloins & 12 chicken tenderloins. Plus, 6 cakes! Hubby and I will be well fed for quite a while. You freeze your meals & prepare when you're ready. We sampled some other dishes & I am sold on this concept. We always ask "what's for dinner" when it's 7pm and we're both starving, so hopefully this will help that dinner solution! And, it's real food - nothing really processed, so you also feel good about what you are eating.

Busy....

Last week was a little crazed. Work really took over and I don't think I was finished in the office any night before 7pm. Then my evenings typically entailed working from home that evening as well. So, Friday night, we met up with friends at our old neighborhood haunt. Our beloved pub has been closed for several months, due to the owners not paying bills. Whoops. So, new ownership, new name, new appetizers, but somehow we all felt like we were "home". Hubby and I had dinner & a few beverages, but when the call for Irish Car Bombs was made, we made a quick exit stage left.

On Saturday, we attended a friend's wedding. It was a beautiful and sweet ceremony with many personal touches that made it so special. The bride and groom were announced & they did the processional. The groom escorted his new Mom-in-Law out and I found that to be such a nice gesture. After the parents and grandparents were out, the Bride and Groom came back and served as "ushers" for the guests. They both greeted their respective "side" as the guests left each aisle. It was very appreciated and a lot shorter than trying to do a receiving line.

The reception was a blast -great music, great food, fun favors. The band was big where they attended college and appealed to all ages with fun beach/shag music. Hubby and I took a few spins on the dance floor and really had a good time.

Note: Thanks to everyone for their votes! The contest ended at midnight on Saturday and mom thinks she won. Apparently, she had left the computer momentarily (she's on central time) and when it was 12:00 EST, the home page changed. So, cross your fingers & we should find out Friday if she's a finalist!

My love of dogs, that is. I think I have mentioned Smoochablepooch.com before. My mom entered her English bulldog, Thunder into the contest several months ago. I followed suit and entered our labs as well. Mom took this contest much more serious than I, and is currently in the top running for her state.

Here's the catch... Thunder, my family's beloved bulldog did not make it to see the end of the contest. He had to be put down in December, due to canine lymphoma. It was horrible and very sad. I think my mother is on a mission to ensure that he wins the Tennessee vote. I find it funny that if she wins, she'll win a year's supply of dog food. Helloo? She has already said that she will be donating it to their local animal shelter.

Valentine's Day continued

Hubby and I celebrated our Valentine's Day tonight with a yummy chicken pot pie from a local gourmet deli. Heat and eat, baby. Along with chocolate covered strawberries for me and red velvet cake for him. Plus, my laptop came along to our dinner. Grumble, grumble. I have been working on a proposal for work and I needed to try to get a jump start for hopefully finalizing it tomorrow.

Hubby was very thoughtful and bought me two sweet gifts, both from Swoozie's. Since our store opened in the fall, I think he has bought nearly every gift for me there, which is great. First, a new coffee mug with a personalized "Rise and Shine" message from my Hubby. And, a new red leather address book. Love it. I've been looking for months & haven't found the right size, texture,etc. I can't find a photo online, but it's great! Plus, a sweet card, which is always tops in my book!

Oh, went to my Dr. - I'm sure he thinks I'm stalking because I've been there so much with the same issues. Lungs are clear, no infections so Mucinex for me. It actually seems to have helped, even though I am creeped out by their ads. Luckily, no mucus-monsters on their packaging! Thanks for the get well wishes... hopefully, I'm on the mend!

Happy Valentine's Day!

After feeling that I was about to cough out a body part last night, I made another appointment with my Dr. to find out what all of this bronchitis/sinus/stuff is that apparently loves to settle in my body! This is my 3rd time to the Dr. since Thanksgiving, so I am hoping for a big Z-pack, or better yet, a shot in the booty to finally be rid of this junk! Coughing, sniffing and nose-blowing is not how I pictured spending today!

V-Day

I do love Valentine's Day, or actually what it represents. Do I think that there is a lot of unnecessary pressure put on every man and woman out there and a whole lot of bad gifts, candy and stuffed hearts that can be given as gifts without any thought? Sure.

So, Hubby and I were discussing V-Day this morning. We couldn't get reservations at any of our favorite restaurants, but it's not like we typically just don't go to those restaurants any other night of the week. So, we decided that we'll either order in or cook dinner at home, which I enjoy. Then, we have been going to a Bikram yoga class on Monday and Wednesday nights and the question was... should we go on Valentine's Day? I guess in theory, it sounds sort of sexy - heated room, sweaty bodies, flexible poses, but in reality, we are both sweating like pigs, red faced and tired. Not sure if it would be an appropriate prelude to a fun, "romantic" evening at home!

It's funny... the older I get and the longer I have been married, the acts of "love" come in so many different shapes. I saw one of these acts of love last night. I had settled into bed when I realized that I had forgotten to apply chap stick. Weird obsession, but it's just one of those things... like my nightly hand lotion ritual. Comfy and tired, I asked Hubby to get my chap stick for me, so I could stay happily nestled under the down comforter. He did this without complaint, then waited for me to apply so he could place back into my purse. Awww, ain't love grand?

Roses & Warm Fuzzies

I am part of a women's volunteer organization where I live. Today, we delivered Valentine's Day roses to our Sustainer Emeriti. These are ladies who are at least 80 years old and are Sustainers with this organization. We have about 50 ladies who still live in our area. Let me tell you, if I am half as with it, cute and funny as these ladies were today, when I'm 80, I'll be doing OK. One woman was playing bridge, one was working on her taxes, another catching up on her mail when we stopped by.

It just reminded me of my own Meme, my grandmother, and of time spent with her. It was truly uplifting to meet these fabulous ladies and hopefully we brightened their days as well.

This better lift my butt!

Today at Boot Camp, we did a 30 minute cycle/circuit class, then moved to the gym for numerous rounds of walking lunges, backward lunges, side steps, pop squats and squat thrusts, which are really evil. We also did some sprinting, agility work and abs.

I'm feeling good right now, but I'm sure by tomorrow, I'll be walking a little funny. We decided last night that are going to Key West in April, with two other couples, so I am hoping that these classes will get me bikini ready, or at least bikini/skirt/towel cover up ready by then! I have been scouring the new JCrew catalog for some appropriate FL gear!

Buyer's Remorse.... maybe

I recently bought these note cards for my husband. They are Boatman Geller and I thought they were too cute, plus we have labs, so I thought he could appreciate the "non-tacky" Labrador paraphernalia. Now that they arrived, I'm afraid they are too juvenile for him to use. Not that he writes that many notes, but I don't want him to feel like he's 12 when he uses these! I still think they are so cute, but I just hope he likes them. Any thoughts?

Scooterville,here I come

This is Day 2 of Boot Camp and the soreness has definitely kicked in. Not to go into too much detail, but I just had to go to the restroom and I caught myself holding onto the bar as I sat down. I am thinking that I need one of those lifting chairs, like this so I can get up and down easier.

Today, we had a warm up with jumping jacks & stretching, three rounds of different weight stations - biceps, triceps, "skull crushers with a barbell", the "booza" ball, crunches, etc. Then we went outside to run that consisted of running backwards, sprints, pop squats, etc. Of course, this is in 30'ish degree weather - cold for this Southerner! I did feel better today - no lunch time nap necessary!

I am a kitchen gadget addict, so I always look at the many juicers, peelers, pans and assorted contraptions that I know I won't ever really use. But, at Williams Sonoma, I recently saw this set of pink baking goodies that I know I would use often! First, I love their silicone spatulas, they are wonderful for all sorts of recipes. And then to make them pink & personalized? Even better. I think I need a set or 2 to give and a set for me! I also love their pot holders - mine are literally falling apart from over use.I think these cute pink heart ones would make me even happier when I cook! (hint, hint, hubby!)

Mid-Day Nappage

OK, I don't think it was the best idea to start Boot Camp following Super Bowl Sunday. I'm sure I ate my weight in BBQ, potato skins, dips, meatballs, bruschetta and other assorted "crap" that isn't really healthy, plus I stayed up later than usual! Let's just say that 4:30 AM came early after the afternoon/evening binge session and the weigh in hurt. At least our trainer did tell us that the scale weighs heavy, but still!

I just actually took at 20 minute power nap in my car. Is that wrong? It's freezing here today, so the car was nice and warm... perfect for a cat nap! Now, I'm more refreshed & ready to go!

Neiman Marcus Cookies

I'm not sure of the validity of the email, but the urban legend is that this recipe was purchased by a woman from Neiman's for $250. She thought the price was $2.50, so in an effort to "get back" at Neiman's, she has shared the recipe with everyone she knows. The email has been in circulation for years, but I decided to make the cookies for a Super Bowl party later today. I made them today and they are very yummy. I broke a couple so I had to sample those! The pups were good "watch-dogs" as I baked today.

NEIMAN-MARCUS COOKIES (Recipe may be halved)

2 cups butter

24 oz. chocolate chips

4 cups flour

2 cups brown sugar

2 tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. salt

2 cups sugar

1 8 oz. Hershey Bar (grated)

5 cups blended oatmeal

4 eggs

2 tsp. baking powder

2 tsp. vanilla

3 cups chopped nuts (your choice, optional)

Measure oatmeal, and blend in a blender to a fine powder. Cream the butter and both sugars. Add eggs and vanilla, mix together with flour, oatmeal, salt, baking powder, and soda. Add chocolate chips, Hershey Bar, and nuts. Roll into balls, and place two inches apart on a cookie sheet Bake for 10 minutes at 375 degrees. Makes 112 cookies.

2 Labs Need a Home

I typically don't get very serious on my blog, but my husband received this email last night from a friend who has fostered rescue dogs before, so it is valid. These 2 labs are in Wilmington, NC. As much as I would love to take them in, we would be outnumbered by dogs, so it just isn't feasible. If anyone is interested, there is a contact name and number posted.

I have literally been trying ALL day to make reservations on US Airways. I am currently on hold and I just received the "your call will be answered in 30 minutes". 30, what happened to the usual 2??

Anyway, all of this urgency is because I have dividend miles that will expire if I don't use them today. I shouldn't have waited this long, but it has just slipped my mind. I tried online earlier today and also this evening, and keep receiving annoying error messages after I have chosen flights, chosen seats, put in my credit card information, then to receive "We're sorry, we are experiencing problems with accepting credit cards now". This happened multiple times and I had no help when calling the customer service line earlier. Arrrrgh.

I am wanting to hang up the phone & forget about the miles, but then I feel like I'm throwing money out the window! And my Mama just didn't raise me to do that! (Insert southern accent).

Side Note: I was ON HOLD for 1 1/2 hours. Luckily, the season finale of Top Chef was on, so I held the phone to one ear as I watched the show. Finally, I am the proud owner of 2 dividend miles tickets on US Air.

Preparing for sleep deprivation

Hubby and I have signed up, yet again, for Boot Camp. This is a 3 day a week, 6-week torture, um exercise program that is offered at our gym. We've done this class 3 other times, and it starts at 5:15 AM. Yes, 5:15AM for the non-morning person (that would be me). It's a great class - we run, do sprints, plyometrics, lift weights, do countless squats and push ups. You get the idea! I enjoy the workout, but I'm always glad when it's over. I will admit, as much as I loathe the early time, it's great to be done with a workout before I go to work.

The class starts on Monday, so I really need to prepare for my early 4:45 AM wake-up calls. For the past few weeks, I've had a hard time dragging myself out of bed at 7. Oy. Not sure what my deal is. Our dogs have had no problem waking up lately... they have been up and crying to go out by 5:30. Maybe they know our class starts next week!

Wedding tasks... one year later

This weekend, I finally took our "guest book" from our wedding to have framed. Yes, it's been over and year and should have been done by now! Instead of a traditional guest book, we had our guests sign on a document that included a passage read at our wedding, our names and dates. It's about an 11 x 14 in size. It was nice, because this is something that we will be able to see every day & remember all the nice folks who attended our special day. I wish I had a good photo to show it, but I will include one when it's finished at the framers.

Other wedding duties included opening a set of sheets that we received as a wedding gift. I washed and dried them & made the bed. I told my hubby that they seemed really big and didn't fit like our others. Later, while in bed, I couldn't fall sleep and at the same time, wondering if leaving the ceiling fan on during the day will cause a fire, I looked over & realized that I had turned the sheet the wrong way when I made the bed. DUH. So, I got up, since I was still awake and remade the bed! Hubby didn't like the way they felt and swears that the thread count on the others that we use are higher. I noticed that he didn't have any trouble falling asleep!

The List

My husband and I have an agreement about my "list". If these men ever come knocking on our door, declaring their undying love for me, hubby has agreed to look the other way, forget & forgive.

Lately, I have a new addition to my list. I haven't even professed this new love to my husband. It's Tucker Carlson. (Sigh). I don't know if it's his political banter, his preppy ties or that brown flippy hair. With the 2008 political race getting started, I'm sure I will have many opportunities to "see" my new man.

Others on my list include, and in no particular order: John Cusack, Patrick Dempsey, LL Cool J and Anthony Kedis. And all are for different reasons. And just so the record states, Patrick Dempsey has been on my list since "Can't Buy Me Love" and not the recent Gray's Anatomy fame.

Eyebrow Shapage

I've been neglecting the brows as of late... It's actually been months, which is probably rather scary. Now you are talking to a girl who had never had them waxed until '99 - don't know how my Mom forgot that life lesson!

When I was working part-time for a friend who owns a local hair salon, I had Angela, one of the girls who worked there do the monthly shaping. She did a great job, but I've since gone back to full time employment and Angela is no longer doing brows. Mine have since been neglected, except when I can steal a few minutes of good sunlight & my Tweezerman's!

To my surprise, 2 local waxers had left their respective salons to open The Brow Lounge. I love the name and the concept. They only do waxing, and they do all kinds. They also have neat gifts to go along with waxing. They are currently offering a cute Valentines PJ set to go along with your, ahem bikini wax. I wonder what a Brazilian will get you?! Just getting the eyebrows tonight.. not sure what I'll pick up as a gift for that!

I had to go to my Doctor yesterday for some kind of cough/upper-respiratory infection thing that had not gone away in 1 1/2 weeks. I'm on the mend with my two prescriptions and hot tea. While in the crowded waiting room, there was an older man who had two ladies with him. He was in a wheel chair with a blanket covering him. He would speak to all of ladies as they came in and if they didn't respond, he would LOUDLY respond, "What, don't wanna talk to me?". He kept telling everyone "I think I'm next", then "I feel like I might die". He was finally called back, but I did hear him as he was leaving stating "Coming through...out of my way!". It was one of the funniest things I have seen lately... He was so cute, but when does one become that honery old guy at the Dr's.?

6 weird things about me

I should probably ask my husband to answer this for me! Thanks to The Preppy Wedding for tagging me!

1. I sleep with a down comforter and ceiling fan on high, every season of the year. My poor husband can be sweating or freezing, but I love to "cocoon" under the down. If I get hot, I simply stick a leg out.
2. Ever since I had braces, I have been slightly obsessive about brushing my teeth. I keep a toothbrush at work, one in my purse and of course, one at home. I now have the SoniCare that I love. I think I live in fear of something green stuck between my teeth or bad breath.
3. One of my favorite food combinations is sweet and salty. To me, the combination of Wendy's french fries dipped in a frosty tastes mighty good! I discovered this as child and still revert back to it when I have the chance.
4. If I have a presentation or will be speaking in public, I will try to practice in a mirror or just run through my spiel in my head or out loud. I'm sure this looks very funny when I'm driving while doing this!
5. I am very sentimental about cards, books, photos and really anything on paper. I have saved letters and photos from as early as the 3rd grade. I recently ran across extra wedding invitations (like 30 of them - what am I going to do with these?) and I just couldn't bear to toss them. I have already saved a few for the scrapbook, etc., but it just made me sad to throw them away.
6. I can pinch with my biggest toe and 2nd toe. It's not like I can write with my toes or anything, but it comes in handy if my hubby is snoring and he needs a "gentle" reminder to stop!

Downward Facing Dog(s)

Since I am trying to keep up with my New Year's Resolution of exercising, last night, I decided to break out one of my Pilates DVD's. I don't think I've used this since I've been married or in a house with multiple dogs! As soon as I rolled out my yoga mat, Zoe decided that she needed to walk all over it. Then when I actually started the DVD and my practice, both dogs were all over me. My hubby was preparing for a business meeting, so he was a little pre-occupied to corrall the dogs. At one point, I looked over and Zeus was literally in the down-dog pose. Of course, all I can do is laugh. They finally quit stepping over me or bringing me toys and just watched... very intent on what "mom" was going to do next.

Church shoes vs. verses

As a child, I attended Sunday School every week with my Grandmother, affectionately referred to as Meme. She would pick me up in the morning and I was always impressed by her great shoes. She would drive over in one pair, then change into her "church" shoes, just to come in... then go through the ordeal of changing back into the driving shoes to only replace them with the church shoes once we were safely in the parking lot of the church. I was secretly amazed that she always remembered to make the change! The rest of my family wasn't overly religious, but I guess Meme wanted to ensure that I was brought up in a church setting.

Our minister spoke yesterday about the many verses and Chapters of the Bible and I realized that the last time I really paid them any attention was while attending Sunday School with Meme. She would sometimes quiz me on the Chapter names and order on our weekly drive. I think I was really only interested in which shoes she was wearing that morning.

I found myself thinking about their importance and if it would be helpful to better know the Bible, the many verses and stories. Or would it just turn me into one of "those" people who can spout out quotes without really understanding their meaning? I have known several people who have read the Bible, cover to cover. Me, not so much. Anyone out there who has added the Bible to their required reading list?

A game that involves coupons?

Have any of you used The Grocery Game? I have several friends and acquaintances who use this program religiously and swear that they are now paying for organic milk, fancy vacations and private school tuition by "playing". I skeptically signed up for a trial membership and will try it out this week. Basically, the premise is that this "program" has figured out the science behind the sales cycle of the major grocery chains and it tells you about coupons that you should use when certain items are on sale to make the most of your savings. You may be buying 10 rolls of paper towels when you don't particularly need them, but it will still be a savings. So, I clipped coupons today and printed off my list for Harris Teeter, my local store. I'll be trying it out later this week. As much as I consider myself organized, I just somehow can't see myself being this disciplined to make it work... or have the storage for the zillions of paper towels that I will need to store!

Swiffer Wet Jet - Cause for alarm?

I recently received an email from a friend about Swiffer Wet Jets and causing liver damage to dogs. I normally delete these without reading, but the friend who sent the email has a dog who is experiencing problems with his liver. So anyway, it did worry me a bit, seeing as I do use a Swiffer Wet Jet and have 2 dogs of my own. So, I had saved it until I could do a little investigating and have found that this story is not true. Not to sound like an over-bearing "mother", but I do find that I worry with our dogs since they can't tell you when they aren't feeling right, have a headache, etc.

The white stuff

We don't often have snow here in NC, or North Cakalacky as it is sometimes called. We awoke to nice little flurries this morning that have gained momentum. Not enough to cancel school, but it's pretty to watch. Wish that I could be curled up at home, on my sofa with a cup of coffee, two dogs sleeping at my feet and my newest book or the latest craft project from Monogram Momma. Ahhhh. Oh well, next best thing... my office, laptop, a bottle of water and a video shoot that will take most of my day.

What do I want to be when I grow up?

I have been contemplating my career for the past few months. I enjoy what I do, but it doesn't always offer the flexibility or creativity that I crave. Since I was in High School, I have loved planning and organizing parties or events. When I was older and my friends became engaged, many came to me with wedding questions and I was always glad to help. Many of my past jobs did have event planning & this always was the "fun" part of my day. When I was married, I loved planning our wedding. I know that many people probably do enjoy this task, but I really felt an emptiness after the wedding, because I didn't have anything to plan or coordinate!

I recently found a Wedding Planning and Directing class. I enrolled and will begin taking classes in March. I can't wait. Not sure if this will open a new chapter in my life, or possibly some part time work - who knows? I am looking forward to this new challenge and hopefully, new opportunities.

New Class Idea: Self-Defense - Just Bite 'em

Did anyone watch 24 last night? I'm still laughing, and almost nauseous from the scene where Jack Bauer bites the terrorists jugular vain to kill him!?!

I know that as women we've been taught to scratch, kick, bite, spit, etc. if ever faced with an attack. And, if I am ever in this situation, I hope that I remember everything I've been taught! Somehow, I just never imagined myself locking into my attacker's neck with my teeth. Do you ask for a napkin or perhaps some sort of anti-bacterial mouth rinse when you are through?

I'll be tuned in again tonight to see what Jack does next!

Love and Hate

Yes, that is my current relationship with EBay. In December, I bid on and won a Hallmark ornament for my mother & ended up getting screwed over by leinenbgd on EBay. Long story short, after I had to contact him about the item, he said it had been shipped, but it never arrived. He later told me that he "accidentally" told me that it was shipped, but he was referring to a different item. Then, he said due to the fact that my PayPal payment took longer than expected, he relisted and resold the item. I am trying to get a refund, but just to let you know - be aware of him and do not buy from him. He has a decent rating too (98%) and has been a member for quite a while. His communication has been horrible & as soon as I have my refund, he will receive a horrible rating.

So, I am back on EBay and currently winning the same ornament. Wish me luck!

We had a great weekend, here in NC. The weather was beautiful, so we took the dogs for a walk at the park, looked at a couple of houses and hubby is currently making dinner. Life is good. One of the houses today was really nice & what we need and what we have been trying to find. It's the right school district, good space, good yard and not really any updates that we would have to do immediately, aside from as little painting. Not sure if the timing is right for us, but we may need to make it that way.

Husband and dogs have taken over dining room

I have a lovely, low glass bowl that we received as a wedding gift. It currently sits on our dining room table. My husband somehow always places bills and papers in it. (Note: we also have two large dog kennels in our dining room right now, along with boxes that should go to storage, a weed-eater that my husband received for Christmas (that I have asked to be put somewhere else), a Christmas wreath, my wedding portrait (not hung - leaned against the wall) and various other items. Needless to say, we really don't use this room as anything else but dog storage & assorted crap storage.

I am trying to find some type of pretty, faux green apples or pears to place in it. Does anyone have a good source, or other suggestions? I thought I had seen some Smith-Hawken at Target the other day, but on my quick trip today, I didn't see spot them.

We will be putting our house on the market this Spring, so I'm looking for ways to spruce it up. Yes, the dog kennels, boxes and other crap will also be put away!

Sick of looking at research questions

OK, not a great title. I'm working on a project and frankly, I'm over it. I'm on my 10th revision of a list of research questions for one of our clients and we are now up to 50 questions. Waaaay too long for an online survey, but they keep pushing to add more. But, anyway... I digress. Just feeling a tad brain-dead and blurry-eyed from staring at the computer all day. So, I ask myself, why do I get on blogger so I can stare at the screen a little more?

Glad it's Thursday and the weekend is near. Even though I have frozen all week, I'm glad it finally feels like winter. Glad that you can tell that the days are getting longer since it's still daylight outside & it's after 5pm. Glad that I have the sweet smell of star gazer lilies in my office, that were a sweet gift from a friend. Glad that in a week, hubby and I will have a new shower, tub and fixtures installed into our little bathroom! Glad that I have on my new, pink JCrew cable knit sweater today.

I'm going to review these once more, so I can rest easy tonight.

In need of a motivational kick in the bum

With the New Year, along with all of the others, I also made a resolution to work out more and be healthier. I did make it to a cycle class last night, but my motivation to run as somehow flown out the window. We have races scheduled and I have barely put in any mileage. They are a relay marathon (I'll run a 10K), a 5 miler, a 10K and a half marathon, starting in February. I have also found little 100 calorie packs of baked Cheetos. OK, not anything that is considered gourmet or even palatable by most, but for whatever reason, these little puppies have been very satisfying around 3pm. I'm sure I could be doing worse, eating-wise, but still!

So, is anyone else out there feeling like me or perhaps you can motivate me with some good words of wisdom to get me off my rear?

Contrary to what some may think, Audrey Hepburn did not write this beautiful poem, Sam Levenson did. Levenson wrote "Time Tested Beauty Tips" for his grandchild, and it just so happened to be one of Audrey's favorite poems. She read it to her children on the very last Christmas Eve she spent with us here on Earth.

New kind of purchase

Guess what I bought yesterday? Well, yes, I did order new address labels by Boatman Geller with a cute green damask pattern. But, what I am taking about is buying pre-natal vitamins. Ack, I still really can't believe that I bought them. No, I'm not pregnant and we don't have a set timetable, but we have been taking about trying to have a baby at some point this year. So, I was at Target and they were on sale, so what the heck! I'm about halfway through my regular multi-vitamins, so when those are done, I'll start on the pre-natals.

Still scares the crap out of me... we are old enough and secure enough, but I guess it's the fear of the unknown. I'm very much a planner, so I want to control as much as I can. I did go ahead and get tested for immunity to Rubella and CF at my last OB-GYN appt. and all is clear on those fronts.

Now, I'm back to JCrew and Swoozie's... my regular shopping haunts!

Chocolate Decadence and Chicken Foot

Now that's quite a title, isn't it? I have been meaning to post these pictures from New Year's Eve. First, is the Chocolate Decadence cake from the Joy of Cooking that I made for the party we attended. This is a flourless chocolate cake that ended up being really good, if I can toot my own horn. It was actually easier than I expected. You use 16 oz. of bittersweet chocolate, butter, eggs, separated into whites & yolks, cream of tartar and sugar. Now, there is some mixing, melting and folding, but all in all a success. I, of course, forgot to take a before picture when the cake was pretty and neat. I served with Hagen Daaz vanilla bean ice cream and homemade raspberry sauce.

Next is Chicken Foot which is a dominoes game that my husband and I began playing several years ago. It is addictive and can get pretty cut-throat. Very fun... we looked up from playing and realized that it was 2:30 am and we are normally the ones who leave early!

OK, is it bad that I was probably too hung-over to post yesterday? Arrgh. We celebrated the new year with a close group of friends, had a lovely dinner, but had a tad too much champagne that induced a mild headache all day!

As far as New Year's Resolutions are concerned, I want to do a better job with my overall fitness. We have several races planned, but I want to be better about going to the gym on a regular basis. I also want to do a better job about going to church. We found a church that we love, but just get lazy on Sunday mornings. I also want to continue on a search for more fulfilling employment.

So, there it is.. in "print". Happy New Year!

Lighted Christmas Balls

This is an interesting little phenomena that is going on in our city. Throughout the Sunset Hills neighborhood, one of the oldest in the city, literally hundreds of these really cool balls, orbs, etc are hung from the tree tops. Hubby and I were driving to a party on the 23rd and noticed these. We both squealed like 4 year olds and drove through this canopy of lights. They are truly amazing. This blog shows photos and even directions on how to make these. Lots of chicken wire, lights, extension cords and some way to heist these into the trees!

Post Christmas shopping

I love shopping post Christmas. Not only for the little deals and treats to save for next year, but to find the perfect matching pants for the argyle sweater I received. Hubby bought me this great argyle sweater (no longer listed online), but then today I found these. Perfect. Then to Ann Taylor for deals on cute slingbacks. A fun leopard pair, perfect for black pants and a brown faux crocodile for work.

Now, I'm not really into waking up at 4am to shop for the sales.. I leave that to my mom. She's the real pro. She knows what she wants and can work her way through half the city in an hour with goodies galore.

Merry Christmas!

The tree is trimmed, the presents are wrapped, the dogs are wearing their Christmas collars and are patiently waiting on Santa. After church, we will head to my in laws for the holiday.

They Might Be Giants

Last night, I was at dinner with hubby and a few friends. Somehow the conversation turned to one of the guys talking about holding small demitasse spoons and acting like a GIANT. I can remember a similar conversation at Suburban Cupcake about how when ladies visit Costco and walk around the giant store with oversized carts, humongo cans of peaches and extra large boxes of Frosted Flakes, we begin to feel like Barbie!

I guess it just shows that men always want to be big, burly and strong, and ahem, oversized while we want to remain small, petite and dainty.

Wrap it up

My husband's family believes in buying for every single member of the family. There will be no only buying for kids, or drawing names. So, I have accepted this past time, because I know that I would lose this fight. We make a list on a legal pad about who wants what, then we divide and conquer.

I added new new items to his list to include monogrammed scarves and purses. Then, I was the designated wrapper. He boxed, I wrapped. At one point he asked if I had done this professionally. I actually had in college!

I believe in pretty bows and nice paper. Bows should follow the Martha guidelines and should be pretty and sheer, gift wrap should have neat corners and no sloppy tape.

We were both impressed with our handiwork when it was all over and hopefully so will the recipients. I doubt his young nephews will care, but still!

The Hair Trifecta

For those of you who suffer from flat iron burnout (literally) or issues surrounding keeping your hair straight and silky, you must try the CHI products by Farouk. My salon sells these & I have become a convert. I now use the dryer, flat iron and CHI oil. They keep your hair silky, the flat iron doesn't seem to catch on any hair and cause to break. These are pricey, but wonderful products!

I did buy the pink breast cancer flat iron that is too cute, plus it works great and I supported a wonderful cause.

1964 1/2 mustang something or other

I love my mom. I really do. However, some of her requests just crack me up. She has collected Hallmark ornaments for many years - since before I was born, but she doesn't really use them at Christmas or even really like them. But, she has some of the entire collections, so why give up now?

Enter the last and final ornament in the Kiddie Car series... the 1964 1/2 mustang kiddie car.

So, they were sold out everywhere. She called, I called, I looked online. I got on a waiting list to buy the display at one of our Hallmark stores to find out that the display was stolen! Who steals from the Hallmark store!?!

So, after being outbid many times on eBay, I finally secured one for her last night at only $5 over retail. Whew. So now, she will have the entire collection that we will probably sell on eBay next year! Go figure!

Christmas Cheer

This has been "the week" for my husband's birthday, holiday parties, festive gatherings and, best of all, the stomach flu! Yes, my husband had it last Sunday, I left work early with it on Wednesday and we are down a combined 8 pounds, but back on the mend.

Whew, I would not wish that stuff on my worst enemy. My appetite came back yesterday and luckily, the party we attended had a mashed potato bar. Pure genius and served in cute martini glasses. I've seen this done at wedding receptions, but it was perfect for this gathering. As Rachael Ray would say, yum-o.

Today, hubby is off to watch the Steelers play, I am finishing some last minute shopping and attending a holiday tea. Very fun and girly for me. Dogs are snoozing near the tree, so life is good.

Wait a minute, Mister Postman...

As long as the packages actually get picked up tomorrow, I think I have just found one of the best holiday time saving tools. I had to ship two packages for Christmas and I hate dragging the boxes with me to work, then running out on my lunch hour, to stand in line at the Post Office for an hour in order to mail them. Since I kept seeing the ads for package pickup & online postage, I decided to try it. In all of about 5 minutes, and that included setting up the account and weighing the packages, I have my postage paid labels and the packages scheduled for pick up. Whoo-hoo! Time for this girl to go have a slim a bear and see if there's anything on TV.

Holiday Edition - Getting to Know You

11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? Hmmm... My mother is notorious for giving practical presents - I started to receive Lenox Holiday china as a child. Now, I appreciate it, but it wasn't cool when everyone else got an Atari!

23. Favorite ornament theme or color? I love glass ornaments and have started the Swarovski star collection.
24. Favorite for Christmas dinner? Growing up, we had Christmas Eve dinner which was usually pork tenderloin or ham, broccoli casserole, etc. My in-laws do a yummy Christmas Day dinner of ham, turkey and all of the fixings.
25. What is the real meaning of Christmas for you? For me, the real meaning of Christmas is the birth of Jesus. I really appreciate the quiet times that Christmas brings and time to spend with family, friends and loved ones.

Waiting to Exhale

OK, I'm up relatively early on a Saturday, because my husband actually wants to go try out a new Bikram yoga studio. They told us to hydrate before class, so I'm enjoying a cold Dasani, instead of a cup of coffee. I've done yoga before, and enjoyed it, but I am a little intimidated by all of this. It's an 1.5 hour long class AND the room is heated to 105 degrees! I may just fall over from heat exhaustion while trying to hold the warrior pose! Wish me luck!

Faux sugar provides morning inspiration

Has anyone else noticed that Splenda is providing "sweet", inspiring messages on their packets? Since I bought the new box, I have noticed little messages on the packets as I artificially sweeten my morning coffee. A nice touch!

about mothers not only having issues with post-partum depression, but bi polar disorder and other mental disorders. As A), someone who is seriously considering pregnancy and B) someone who inherited the worry gene from both Grandmother and Mother, this bothers me! I know that if and when I decide to have children, I will be bombarded with advice from friends, family, co-workers and strangers on the street, but I guess it just really hit home about serious of a problem this is and how it often goes undiscussed or undiagnosed.

Christmas card drama

The Christmas cards are on their way, so now it's time to take the cute, we're newlyweds, here's our cute picture, picture!

I had asked my hubby if we could take our photo for the card this weekend. He agreed, even willingly and dressed nice on Sunday and even asked a friend to stop by and assist. So, our "photographer" Ben arrived and took some shots of us with the dogs. After I uploaded them, I realized that they weren't really that good - zombie eyes on the dogs from the flash, we were laughing too much, etc. So, I set up the camera and the timer and thought we might be able to get a better shot. By then, we were all a little tired - the dogs were running out of the picture, dog decided to roll on back, lick a paw, etc. Total disaster! I sent a few shots to Ritz last night to see if they will possibly look better once printed, so I am keeping my fingers crossed. I think everyone will run and hide if I pull out the camera again tonight! I may post a few of our rejects later.

Hubby thinks we should just send a picture of ourselves with a note that says the dogs were out chasing squirrels. May not be a bad idea!

Little Pissers

I recently ordered a "waterer" like this one from Drs. Foster & Smith. It always seemed like the water bowl was empty or just a huge mess. Our neat 2.5 gallon waterer arrived yesterday. This little contraption works much like the water coolers in your office. I filled it to the top & set it up. Our dogs drank and drank, dripped all over the floor and then drank some more. I think they are intrigued with how it automatically refills. Needless to say, we woke up to two wet blankets in their two kennels this morning. My sweet hubby forgot to let them out last night for their late night potty, so I have put the blame on him!

Dueling Banjos

Hubby and I have decided to run the Country Music Marathon on April 28 http://cmmarathon.com. Even though I grew up near Nashville, I am not a country music fan, with the exception of some Hank Williams or Johnny Cash on occasion. Apparently, they have music stations every mile... think it's rude to use my iPod? Anyway, this race is near my hometown, family and friends, so we can also use this for a little vacation time also have a great event to use as a motivator!

Argh...

Hubby and I had plans to go to the cycle class last night at 6:30, but I am now convinced that my boss has a honing device to know when I actually have to leave the building at 5:30. Needless to say, my boss stopped by my office around 5:20 to explain a new project, so I was late getting home, then on the way to the gym, we hit every light and thus, missed cycle. So, we did our own thing.. no big deal.

So, we had then decided to get up this morning for the 6am cycle class... we show up & all of the cycles are full. OK, I'm a big girl - I can run on a treadmill, but without my iPod? I do believe that I was on the clunkiest/loudest treadmill, but I survived my 3 mile run. Then, sweet hubby who made coffee forgot to actually turn it on, my mother called at 7:30 to ask the names of a relatives child (which scared me, because I am afraid of early morning phone calls from family)then I accidentally grabbed the hot flat iron when putting it away. Oh, and I gained a pound this week! I just can't seem to "get right"... I had a client call first thing this morning to question a bill... and I still didn't have enough coffee in my system to properly function. Just trying to decide why I'm being punished and this crazy cycle class is just out of my reach??

OK... feeling better - atleast I did get one thing off my list... ordered our Christmas cards last night! Of course, ours will have us and not this cute, bald baby! Now to take the perfect photo this weekend!

Thankful

Happy Thanksgiving... I am thankful to have a caring husband, a loving family and group of friends, two crazy dogs who make me laugh each and every day and work that I enjoy. We ran in the Greensboro Gobbler this morning - a very fun 1.5 mile run with our two dogs. The dogs would have finished way faster were they not leashed to thier slow owners!

We leave later today for the in-laws and the eating will commence... always a ton of people and even more food. I did bake a pumpkin pie and a chocolate-toffee cracker candy, not very traditional, but good nontheless.

What's Next?

Other than the Turkey Day Gobbler Dog Jog that we will do on Thanksgiving morning, hubby and I have no races planned. We are considering the Music City Half Marathon in April, held in Nashville, which is close to my hometown. I've also looked into the Mardi Gras Half Marathon in Feb. and a few others. Any good half marathons recommendations in the southeast?

Catcher in the Rye

I'm re-reading Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. I think it's been since high school and I had forgotten how Salinger writes in these long, rambling run on sentences that make you struggle to keep up. Love this book and it's great to revisit. I am remembering why it doesn't take long to read - I don't think I even take a breath when reading it!

Tired Puppies

After spending the weekend at their favorite getaway, Zeus and Zoe have been sleeping like champs. We board them at a great place with 3 acres of fenced land, a pond and all the tennis balls they can fetch. They've been pooped since I picked them up yesterday. Blowing Rock was great, as was our 1st Anniversary... had lots of fun surprises - beautiful flowers delivered to my office on Friday, chocolates from our favorite place http://chocolatefetish.com and a wine delivery from friends in the area. We even had an array of weather - from 70's and sunny to cold, snow flurries & 30's. It was nice to get away and relax. Oh, we also enjoyed bites of a surprisingly good one-year old wedding cake topper! It was red velvet, the same as one of our wedding cake layers and was actually yummy. Ahhh, wedded bliss. The first year was an adjustment for both of us - I guess that's what happens when two, independent 30 somethings get married & realize they have to share! We probably sound like pre-schoolers!

I do still get a chill when I think about our wedding day and walking into our church and finally seeing his face... the day was truly special for both of us and the details of the day were just as I had imagined. I can still feel the weight of the dress and the smell of my bouquet, not to mention a few nervous butterflies in my stomach!

Cold Noses

Why is it that when I am wearing shorts, that my dogs both like to insert quite cold noses near my tush? Home from the gym & they are both very interested in how I smell. We are dealing with our recent labby adventure... their first ear infection. A trip to the vet, a good ear cleaning & ear drops for 10 days are the solution. Not too bad, but they have to be stored in the fridge, so the pups really don't like how cold they are. Guess I'm getting back for the cold noses!

Trip On..

Yay, our anniversary trip, recently postponed is back on schedule. Just a short trip to Blowing Rock, but it's always one of our favorite places to visit. We will be staying at a cute B&B called the Victorian Inn. Just can't wait to get away. I have two presentation for work between now and then and several other projects to begin. Looking forward to our trip and all of the fun shops and antiques in BR. Off to play with the pups and work on my presentation for tomorrow!

Anniversary gifts? Tick-tock

With our first year anniversary in just 11 days, I feel like I have some preparation to do. I actually just received one of our wedding gifts... our wedding was Nov. 2005, the gift was delivered in March, but went to my former residence. Luckily, nice landlord was holding my Lenox china dinner plate hostage for the past 6 months! I was just horrified in knowing that I hadn't written a thank you note!

With work taking over recently, our anniversary trip to the mountains has been put on hold. I know we have wedding cake to eat, photos to review, cards to re-read and we also have the "wedding wishes" that our guests wrote to us that have been in a little sealed envelope.

Now, I'm stuck on gifts.. paper is traditional and clocks are modern. Hubby does want this gadget that would fall under clocks, but it just doesn't seem very sentimental? http://www.garmin.com/products/forerunner305/

Cavities in the Making..

Ok, so is anyone else halfway through their Halloween candy and it's only the 30th? I like to buy it early, so I have a good selection, but I seem to have gone a bit overboard. Hubby demolished the peanut butter cups and I have put a good dent in the hot tamales. Worked out tonight and a salad for dinner. No candy today. Whoo-hoo, a small victory.

I was runnin'

I have neglected my new blog already. Hubby and I ran our Half Marathon this past Saturday. He finished in just over 2 hours and I came in about 26 minutes after him! All was good until I hit Mile 11 and I got some serious pain in my left knee. Not sure what happened... I stopped and stretched, said a few choice words and made it through the next couple of miles. I achieved my goals: finishing, coming in under 2:30 and beating a guy who I knew was running and I hoped I could atleast beat him! I did learn a new acronym on race day - DFL. Dead freakin' last. Glad it wasn't me! We had great shirts made through Running Banana Everyone loved them!
